Bath to Bristol Airport

19.2 miles, and almost none of it motorway. The route, the coach, the Clean Air Zone question, and how to decide between driving and being driven.

Updated 02/08/2026 · 5 min read · By the ParkingBristolAirport team

Bath to Bristol Airport is 19.2 miles by road — the shortest of the out-of-Bristol journeys people regularly make to the airport, and the one they most often underestimate. Nineteen miles sounds like half an hour. It is not, and the reason is structural rather than bad luck.

The route

Bristol Airport’s own directions for anyone coming from the south east are short: follow the A4 towards Bristol, bear left onto the A4174, then continue on the airport signs. That keeps you on the ring road rather than through the middle of Bristol, which matters for more than one reason — see the Clean Air Zone below.

A route planner will usually also offer a southerly alternative on the A368 through the Chew Valley, which measures 19.7 miles — half a mile longer, and on our overnight sample a minute slower. It is a rural A-road rather than a dual carriageway. Which of the two is quicker on the day depends entirely on what is happening on the A4.

Why 19 miles takes longer than you think

Compare the free-flow samples we took overnight on 02/08/2026, all measured to BS48 3DY:

FromDistanceFree-flow sampleRoughly
Bath19.2 miles45 min26 mph average
Taunton36.1 miles48 min45 mph average
Cardiff46.8 miles1 hr 03 min45 mph average

Bath is less than half the distance of Cardiff and takes two thirds as long, on empty roads. The arithmetic is there for you to redo: the Taunton and Cardiff journeys are mostly motorway, and the Bath one is mostly not. Roundabouts, junctions and 40mph limits do not care that it is only nineteen miles.

Those times are an overnight sample, not a schedule. They were measured in near free-flow conditions on 02/08/2026 and they are the best the road will ever do. We have not published a peak-time figure because we have not measured one, and guessing at one is how people miss 06:00 flights. Check a live route on the morning and build in a margin on top of it.

Does the Clean Air Zone apply?

Bristol’s Clean Air Zone has been live since 28 November 2022, and the airport is not in it. Nor is the ring-road route the airport signs you along from Bath — which is why the airport attaches its Clean Air Zone warning to the M5 junction 18 and M4 approaches, and not to this one.

The risk is if you follow a route planner straight through the middle of Bristol instead. A non-compliant private car pays £9 for the day, charged once per 24-hour period. Euro 4/5/6 petrol (roughly 2006 or newer), Euro 6 diesel (roughly end of 2015 or newer), electric and hydrogen vehicles and motorbikes are not charged, and the council says more than 88% of vehicles entering Bristol already comply. Check your own registration on the GOV.UK checker — it is the only answer that counts.

The coach — Bath has a direct Airport Flyer

The Airport Flyer A4 runs between Bath and Bristol Airport, and it is the only genuinely direct public-transport option from any of the airport’s larger catchment towns other than Bristol itself. Bristol Airport publishes it from £9.50 single (checked 02/08/2026), with:

Frequencies change, so check the live Flyer timetable rather than trusting any number you read on a parking website, including this one.

Coach, taxi, drop-off or park — the honest comparison

Four ways to get from Bath to a departure gate, and they fail in different ways:

There is no universal winner. Two people on a weekend break with hand luggage should probably take the Flyer. A family of four with hold bags on a 06:00 departure is a different sum entirely. Check the live price for your dates and do the arithmetic against four Flyer fares — it takes a minute and it is your money.
